Core classes

Ever dreamed of capturing incredible and jaw-dropping aerial photos and videos? Then this class is for you! It's designed for beginners who want to get a strong start in drone photography or someone that wants to take their skills to the next level — from the fundamental camera & flight basics, to navigating all the FAA regulatory and safety considerations.

You’ll leave with a clear roadmap for your first flights, plus an understanding of what steps you’ll need to take to stay legal, safe AND creative.

What You’ll Learn

  • Overview: what makes drone photography so exciting (grand perspectives, composition, light)
  • Equipment selection: what to look for when choosing a drone along with the necessary accessories to achieve the greatest shots
  • Flight basics: pre-flight checklist, take‐off/landing tips & tools, general “rules of thumb” for safe operation
  • Key regulatory essentials (for U.S. operators):
  • The difference between recreational vs commercial flights, and why it matters.
  • Registration requirements (e.g., when your drone > 0.55 lb needs registration) and where to register your drone.
  • Visual line-of-sight rule and the golden rule of drone flight (≤ 400 ft unless otherwise authorised).
  • Airspace authorization tools to navigate controlled vs uncontrolled airspace.
  • The simple “barriers to entry” you should know: additional certifications (e.g. Part 107 license for commercial use), insurance/risk concerns, local & state-level restrictions.
  • First-flight planning: where you should fly (and where you shouldn’t), thinking about weather/wind/obstacles, framing your first aerial shot.
  • Next steps: How to build on this foundation: practice flights, editing your photos and footage, moving toward commercial work if you’re interested.

Who This Course Is For:

  • Photographers (or aspiring photographers) with little or no drone experience who want to expand into aerial imagery.
  • Hobbyists and content creators curious about adding drone visuals to their portfolio or social channels.
  • Anyone needing a basic understanding on what regulatory and operational considerations go into flying a drone safely and legally in the U.S.
  • ***Note: This class is not a full commercial drone-pilot certification (e.g., the full FAA Part 107 exam). It’s an introductory class only.

Prerequisites:

  • You should have a basic idea of entry level drones and potentially be in the market for acquiring a basic-level drone capable of aerial stills/video (ideally under 55 lbs / 25 kg for U.S. rules).
  • You should have a general familiarity with photography or the desire to learn about this awesome skill set.
  • Access to your own drone for follow-up practice (recommended but not required).

How the Class Works:

  • Slideshow presentation delivered entirely online so you can join from home (live webinar & recorded session)
  • Approximately 60-90 minutes of guided content + ~15-30 minutes of Q&A (depending on group size).
  • You’ll be encouraged to bring questions and share your first flight experiences or planned projects.

Why This Should Excite You

Drone photography opens up entirely new perspectives — sweeping landscapes, dramatic motion, revealing angles — but it also brings greater responsibility. Without understanding the air-space rules, safety considerations and legal obligations, you risk fines, equipment loss, or worse. This course gives you a solid beginner’s foundation so you can create amazing content AND fly confidently.
