Join us for our new concert photography class! This includes a night out with one-on-one instruction shooting a great show at a popular theater in Denver.
Overview
Concert photography is truly a hobby for anyone. Join Mike's Camera and long-time Denver concert photographer Chris Deutsch for a photography workshop that will get your head banging and your heart pumping! You’ll get a live, two-hour on-line class with instruction on everything you will need for success. We will follow that with an evening to practice what you’ve learned at The Oriental Theater in Denver, CO. You’ll get hands-on instruction and get to shoot Ten-Colorado’s Tribute to Pearl Jam and Sonic Highways: A Tribute to Foo Fighters live, in concert. Then you’ll be able to share the images you captured with the group during a virtual follow-up image critique.
During the photoshoot, we will have plenty of opportunities for one-on-one instruction, to allow for a more personal experience.
What You’ll Learn:
On Monday, June 15th, you’ll get a full introduction to concert photography, including tips on the best local venues to practice your craft. Chris will also help you with information on camera setup, and offer tips on composition, exposure and lighting as well as essential editing knowledge to bring out the best in the photos you take. You’ll also learn firsthand how to grow your hobby over time into a fun side hustle if you choose to do so.
Then on Friday, June 19th, we will meet at The Oriental Theater in Denver, CO for an evening of music and shooting a show! Chris will help you with any camera setting questions and coach you on the best places to get the best photos. You’ll get your commemorative photo pass and be ready to shoot the show. The Oriental Theater has fantastic lighting and sound, so you’ll have a great experience, and capture some great memories.
Chris and the instructors from Mikes Camera will be on hand to answer any technical questions. They will provide assistance and instruction to ensure you capture sensational images.
The following week, on Friday, June 26th, we will meet online to share our favorite images from the show and give each other feedback. You will also be able to pick up a 12x18 print of your favorite image from your local Mike's Camera!
Getting Ready/What to Bring:
- Your camera(s) with extra memory cards and Batteries
- Chris recommends a lens in the 24mm-120mm focal range, but don’t worry if you don’t have that. Even a standard lens in the 35mm-55mm range will deliver awesome results. There is generally no need for a long telephoto. We will be plenty close to the action.
- Ear plugs can be a great idea. Ten and Sonic Highways will rock, delivering a high energy concert in a great theater with full sound and lights.
- We expect a big turnout of music fans along with our Mike’s Camera class, so we’ll also discuss some photography etiquette for the concert.
- Show time is 7:00pm and can run 2-3 hours. Be prepared for a late night to fully maximize your experience. We will be there early at 6:00pm to get you ready.
- Comfortable shoes. You’ll be standing a lot for as much as 3 hours.
- There are many restaurants near The “O”, if you want to grab a bite to eat before things start. The “O” has a full bar if you want something refreshing during the show.
Tuition: $249.00
Tuition includes the two-hour evening webinar and the hands-on shooting workshop at The Oriental Theater. About Your Instructor: Chris Deutsch

Chris Deutsch believes concert photography is for everyone! He’s been doing it for over forty years in the Denver-Boulder area, and he’d like to take you along on his journey.
Chris has a unique ability to capture the defining moments in these shows, the visual memories that perfectly match the performance on stage, including the energy, the exuberance, the personality of each musician. That continues to this day, as he photographs both national touring bands and local Colorado musicians.
In the mid-1980s, Chris Deutsch published Front Row magazine in Denver and did photography for a variety of other publications. For many years, he photographed almost every major show that came through Denver. His portfolio includes many great bands and performers at the peak of their careers: Van Halen, Kiss, Bon Jovi, U2, Iron Maiden, AC/DC & Elton John.
Forty years ago these were just great photographs. Today, they are much more. They are part of history. These are pictures of the performers at their peak. There is an energy and exuberance that matches the music that made these artists famous. Few things are as visual as a great rock n’ roll performance. And few things are more challenging than capturing that. But, it’s so worth it when you do.
