Water Droplets: 3pt Macro Photography workshop - with Angie Payne

Course Overview:

Take a deeper dive into the fun and fascinating world of macro photography by exploring the magical properties of water up close. This class will present equipment options and technical tips to set you up for successfully capturing water droplet photos. If you took Angie’s Snowflake Photography class, there will be some information cross-over (macro basics & gear options), but also a great deal of material specific to water droplets. Additionally, the classroom workshop portion of this class will offer an opportunity to practice the techniques discussed in the online class.

Part 1: Virtual Online Lecture

This online class will touch on macro photography basics before discussing more in-depth the specifics of photographing water droplets.

What you will learn:

  • A review of macro photography basics
  • Macro photography gear options to fit all budgets
  • When and where you are most likely to find water droplets
  • Tips to help maximize your chances of capturing beautiful water droplet photos
  • An overview of how to use focus stacking when photographing water droplets
  • Applying similar macro photography techniques to capturing photos of other small subjects that are frequently found in the same environments as water droplets (namely insects, plants & flowers)

Part 2: Shooting & Editing Workshop

During the classroom workshop, Angie will demonstrate the shooting and editing techniques discussed in the online class and participants will have an opportunity to practice both. This will be a great chance to photograph water droplets in a more controlled, staged environment indoors and an ideal time to practice the shooting and editing techniques involved in focus stacking.

Angie will be hosting the in-person portion of this workshop in two of our locations, Boulder and Colorado Springs. Be sure to purchase the correct ticket for the location you would like to attend at.

(Attendees will be able to access a recording of the class for 7 days after the class ends)

Part 3: Virtual Gallery & Critique

Armed with knowledge and in-person practice, participants will be encouraged to venture outdoors and shoot water droplet photos in the wild during the days between parts 2 & 3 of the class. Participants will then submit 1-2 photos to the virtual gallery for critique. This session will be a valuable opportunity to see what fellow classmates have captured and to learn from each other’s experiences. Plus, you’ll walk away with a free print of one of your photos courtesy of Mike’s Camera!

Additional Details:

  • Attendees will be able to access a recording of the class for 7 days after the class ends.

About Your Instructor:

Angie Payne discovered her love of photography during her time spent exploring nature and traveling the world as a professional climber. Countless days spent in the mountains of Colorado and subsequent climbing expeditions to Greenland and French Polynesia opened Angie’s eyes to the true magnificence of nature and her desire to capture photos of it. Her early photographic pursuits involved an iPhone and inexpensive magnetic lenses. This simple setup was enough to ignite Angie’s interest in pursuing photography more seriously, and in 2012 she purchased her first digital camera. Her current work is mainly concentrated in the world of macro photography, as she is especially obsessed with the tiny worlds that exist within bigger landscapes. Angie currently lives in Boulder, Colorado.
