Overview
Travel photography might sound simple—just go and shoot—but to master it (and really enjoy it) you need to understand the secret art of visual storytelling.
In an illustrated talk covering dozens of assignments around the world, National Geographic photographer and travel writer Jad Davenport will explain the necessary types of images you need—and how to make them—to create compelling visual stories on your next adventure, a weekend camping trip in the High Country or a once-in-a-lifetime cruise in French Polynesia.
What three lenses give you the most versatility? What is a kicker image and why is it important? What are punctuation shots—the easiest images to make––and why are they easy to forget to make? Whether you want to master travel photography so you can create compelling coffee-table books, fine-art prints, social media stories or publish magazine photo essays, you’ll learn how to plan and prepare to create memorable images, whether you’re working with your DSLR or iPhone.
Hear stories, lessons learned and amusing disasters from Jad’s assignments covering the disappearance of Michael Rockefeller in Papua New Guinea, gorillas in the Congo, the fate of the Bounty mutineers on remote Pitcairn Island, the polar-bear hunting Cloud Wolves of the Hudson Bay and the very real Caribbean island that inspired the legend of the Fountain of Youth.
About Jad Davenport
National Geographic photographer, explorer, writer and filmmaker Jad Davenport has spent the last three decades exploring the world’s most remote places. Assignments have taken him to more than 160 countries and island groups and his work has appeared in National Geographic magazines, books and exhibitions, and in publications including LIFE, Conde Nast, Popular Photography, Outside, Coastal Living and ISLANDS.
Prior to joining National Geographic Creative in 2004, Jad spent a decade as a freelance war photographer and documentary filmmaker in more than a dozen conflicts in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Balkans where his work contributed to war crimes investigations. He continues to volunteer as a forensic investigator with the nonprofit NecroSearch International, an organization assisting law enforcement in cold cases.
Jad teaches travel photography on Paul Gauguin Cruises through the South Pacific and spends part of each year leading photography expeditions and field studies on wolves and polar bears in the Canadian Arctic with Churchill Wild. Jad is a 20-year member of the Explorers Club and is based in Denver, Colorado. He has been a happy Mike’s Camera customer for more than 20 years.
