Full Moon Graveyard Photography Class & Shoot

Learn how to photograph the full moon in the darkness of the old Fairmount Cemetery at night- then go shoot with our experts!

This event starts with a photography lecture in the 125 year old Ivy Chapel on the Fairmount grounds. Presented by our experts, the talk explains in easy-to-understand terms how to photograph the moon and how to capture great night and low light images in general.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to set your camera to expose for the moon
  • Illuminating subjects using the light of the moon as your main light source
  • What types of cameras and lenses are best suited for moon and night / low light photography
  • Ideas for how to compose visually compelling moon shots

Fairmount is nationally known, and the home of Denver's early movers and shakers, as well as more current notable people.

After the class, as the sun wanes and the full moon appears you’ll have access to over 200 acres on the Fairmount grounds to make your photos!

Some examples of photo-worthy markers and buildings:

  • The Little Ivy Chapel
  • The main mausoleum and over 150 others
  • Life size copy of by Auguste Rodin’s “The Thinker”
  • Life size statue of the Lady of Grief
  • The Gate Lodge
  • A real military cannon in the military section
  • Visually interesting obelisks and crosses
  • The largest arboretum in the state
  • You may spot some wildlife including deer too

No matter what camera you have, you’ll learn how to make aesthetically interesting images of the moon and grave-covered landscape; even if all you have is your smartphone. Of course the longer your lens is and the better your camera, the more creative options you’ll have. Regardless though, you’ll learn a lot and have a great time!

Ideal kit includes:

  • An interchangeable lens camera, plus
  • A 200mm or longer telephoto lens for tight moon shots
  • A normal to wide angle lens for lunar lit landscapes
  • A sturdy tripod
  • Icing on the cake, a remote or cable release (can always use your built-in self-timer though)

Don’t worry if you do not have an interchangeable lens camera, the below will work too:

  • Non-interchangeable lens camera with high zoom
  • Compact point and shoot camera
  • A smartphone

If you've ever tried making a great picture of the moon you may have been disappointed with the results. This class and hands-on instructional shooting event will demystify the secrets of making stellar lunar photographs!
