Capturing Brilliant Fall Colors
Fall Colors Come Early this Year!
Instruction, practice in the mountains, and Critique
What you’ll learn
Colorado is famous for the fall aspen colors in our spectacular mountains. This fall, take a bold leap in capturing stunning images of the spectacular beauty of our Colorado autumn in this hands on workshop that’s bound to be the highlight of the season. Although we generally offer this workshop in October, we’ve moved this program up on the calendar to September due to the early fall and already changing colors in the mountains.
When we look at the brilliant golden strokes of nature set against the perfect Colorado sky, with the leaves quaking in the breeze, and we feel the deeper cycle of nature we are witnessing, we are moved to bring this all into our photography. Learn how to make a personal statement of how all this touches you; How can you take a quantum step from your previous year’s images, and create images that say what you are truly seeing and feeling.
Session 1: Shooting Workshop
We will succinctly discuss what it takes to create just such amazing fall color images. Then as a group we will head up the 30-45 minutes ride up into the mountains, so that before the light turns magical at about 4:30pm we will be set in beauty and have 90 minutes or so to enter the ecstatic process of creativity in such beauty. Charles will be giving hands on instructions to all on the scene. Depending on the light and the group’s needs, we will head home about 7:00 pm and be back to Mike’s Camera in Boulder by 7:30.
Session 2: Review of Techniques & Image Critique
This will be one of the most fun ever, as we share our images with each other. When a group of individuals all go to the same site with a similar idea of the scenery capture, it’s astonishing the variety of images they return with. We’ll get to see all the images our group-mates saw, and learn many new ways of seeing from each other. Using Charles’ most supportive techniques for “critique” we will all become more skilled at giving and receiving feedback. Between these two-session you will have time to get yourself out shooting more fall colors, and by the end of the course you will have images you are proud of and great entries into the annual Mike’s Camera Fall Colors photography contest. Come join us in nature, beauty, photography and fun!
A detailed itinerary will be sent to each participant prior to the workshop date.
Who Should Attend
This workshop is for the photographer who wants to expand his/her seeing, creativity and skills in photographing the colors of nature. You should have a basic working understanding of your camera, and understand how to “get out of “Auto” when you want to. If you are hoping to enter the Fall Colors photography contest, this is s super way to advance your abilities and greatly improve the images you create. We will be walking short distances from where we park, but it will be on mountain trails at 8,000-9,000 feet so you should feel comfortable with such a hike carrying your gear.
What to Bring Camera & your lenses. A Tripod and flash are helpful if you have them. A Circular Polarizing Filter, and Neutral Density Filter will be beneficial, and a Graduated Filter can be fun to use.
Bring a warm layer or two for the mountains on Saturday as the weather in the fall can be unpredictable.
Loaner Trial Lenses will be made available at no charge on a first-come first-served basis from our Rental Department. Arrive to the store 30 minutes prior to class if you want to check out available gear in the Rental Department.
